Nano is the second typeface I created, originally drawn in 1992. It began as an experiment in restriction: no diagonals, no intersecting or joining strokes, and each letter constructed from a single continuous line.
There is no uppercase alphabet and only the most minimal punctuation, with the full stop standing alone. Many characters include alternate forms, reflecting the way I was working at the time—less concerned with completeness and more interested in exploring different solutions within a fixed set of rules. The name Nano followed my first typeface, Lovebytes. I had intended to create something extremely small, tight and compressed, but the design developed in a different direction. The result was far more delicate and elegant than I had originally imagined.
More than thirty years later, Nano remains an early example of a process that would continue throughout my work: setting myself awkward limitations and seeing where they lead.
