Soundings — the third instalment in the Vintage Youth x Eastern Bloc seven‑part cassette series — comes from What Kind Of Sound?, a previously unreleased project from the archives of Chris McCormack, a highly respected techno producer with a career spanning decades. Known for his precise, driving productions and releases on labels such as Materials, Earwiggle, Primevil and Toytronic, McCormack is also a sought-after mastering engineer who runs Blacklisted Mastering, helping other artists refine and elevate their work.
Across four tracks of beauty — Soundings marks another path for McCormack, shifting from his signature techno grooves into immersive IDM and ambient territories. Just as sailors take “soundings” to gauge water depth, each track probes a different sonic level, revealing richly layered atmospheres, subtle rhythmic detail, and meditative textures. Through his mastery of production, Chris allows every nuance to shine, translating his technical skill into an intimate, exploratory listening experience.
